A 10-week programme aimed at KS2 age groups to help the pupils
reach the national curriculum standards by the end of Key Stage 2.
This includes water safety, core aquatic skills and all the
national curriculum PE swimming outcomes.
INTENT
Deliver an effective school swimming programme which meets the curriculum standards
for swimming and water safety, enabling pupils to:
• Perform safe self-rescue in different water bases situations.
• Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a minimum distance of 25 metres.
• Use a range of stroke effectively (such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke).
IMPLEMENTATION
There are six progressive Awards in the Charter, each one with a specific assessment
criteria. Our School Swimming and Water Safety Awards 1-6 focus on developing core
aquatic skills, effective stroke technique and basic water safety and self-rescue. This can
be achieved with our pool-side delivery and our 30, 45 and 60 minute swimming lesson
slots.
This has been designed as a 10 week/term Scheme of Work per Award, but can be
extended (if needed) as your pupils’ progress.
It is possible to cover 2 Awards in one block e.g. 1&2 award may be achieved in one block
of 10 weeks/term.
IMPACT
• Perform safe self-rescue in different water bases situations.
• Swim competently, confidently, and proficiently over a minimum distance of 25 metres.
• Use a range of stroke effectively (such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke).
• Participate fully in competitive games and activities.
• Pupils will have an understanding of fitness and health and know that taking part in
sport is fun and good for them.
In addition, pupils can progress onto the Aquatic Skills Award and the Self Rescue Award
to achieve their statutory Key Stage 2 attainment level. For the Self Rescue Award, pupils
must complete outcomes without floatation equipment – unless equipment is being used
to simulate aids in different rescue situations.
